The End of the Summer/Fall CSA Share Season

Post by CSA member Susan Wanderman

As the weather gets chillier, I’m sad that the 2013 summer/fall share season will soon be ending. I had a great time preparing (and eating) these delicious vegetables, so I thought about the three things that I will miss most.

First I will miss the vegetables themselves. The cabbage, carrots, broccoli, kohlrabi and sweet potatoes were my favorites. They were all so sweet and fresh, and cooked up so nicely. Other vegetables, such as kale and escarole, gave me the opportunity to try different recipes, in hopes of finding one that would become a family favorite. And then there were the big miscellaneous salads I made out of the vegetables from the weekly share that were tasty when eaten raw, with some beans included. These salads were always a surprise and always great. I will miss them most when there is snow on the ground.

The second thing I will miss most is being part of a small community based on produce from an identified farm, Golden Earthworm. We met the farmers, we had the opportunity to visit the farm, and we each received a weekly share of high quality organic produce.

The third thing I will miss most is the opportunity to blog about the vegetables. I researched fun facts about vegetables, wrote about them, and had the best editor ever to help me with this project.  Laura Yoshida, thank you for being such a great editor!

I am looking forward to the 2014 CSA summer/fall share season, and the wonderful vegetables it will bring. I hope you all have a joyous holiday season, and hope to see you back in 2014!
