What’s in the Box Week #10


CSA WEEK #10
While last week may have been underwhelming, this week is nothing by overwhelming in abundance and beauty!  Our mid-summer crops are here in all their glory!  Watermelons, corn, green beans, oh my!Notes from the fieldsIn anticipation of the upcoming storm, our team harvested nearly all of the watermelons in our first planting – nearly 17,000 pounds in one day!  WATCH THIS VIDEO of the harvest!  This means that we have not just one, but two watermelons for each Veg Share member this week!  Yes, watermelons are included in the Veg Share!This week’s harvestWatermelon
This is the year of the Watermelon!  Our crop is doing brilliantly in this hot weather! Enjoy two this week!  Please KEEP IN THE FRIDGE!

Uses: Raw
When to use: Within 5 days

What I’m making: Sliced for a snack

Green Beans
Storage: In an airtight container in the fridge
Uses: Cooked
When to use: Within 5 days

What I’m making: Steamed and served with butter and salt & pepper

Sweet Corn
Storage: In the fridge
Uses: Cooked
When to use: Within 2 days

What I’m making: Corn on the Cob

Sugarloaf Chicory
This is a thin, cone-shaped head.  Remove all of the outer dark green leaves.  Those become tough in the summer heat.  The inner light leaves have a very mildly bitter flavor.  It pairs well with a lemon juice & olive oil dressing and some sharp Pecorino cheese and crushed garlic.

Uses: Raw
When to use: Within 5 days

What I’m making: Salad as above.

Batavian Lettuce
Storage: In an airtight container in the fridge
Uses: Raw
When to use: Within 5 days

What I’m making: Salad!

Eggplant- 1 piece
Storage: In an airtight container in the fridge.
Uses: Cooked
When to use: Within 5 days

What I’m making: Roasted Dip

IN ROTATION – Sungold Cherry Tomatoes
If you don’t receive tomatoes this week, you will next week!  The plants are just starting to produce, so they are trickling in and we are picking them as quickly as they ripen!
Storage: On the counter (NOT IN THE FRIDGE)
Uses: Raw or Cooked
When to use: Within 3 days

What I’m making: I’ll eat them like candy!
