CSA Week 5

A rainy arugula harvest and Lotus the cow enjoying some lush grass!

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE FARMA very Happy 4th of July Week to you all!  What is more quintessential than a summer BBQ featuring fresh and delicious veggies with friends and family on this week of July? We hope however you choose to celebrate, you are able to have fun and be safe!  Rain and damp weather continue to water our land, though we are grateful for the moments of sunshine that dry out the puddles! Looking at our weather apps, we are always excited to see that little sun icon and hoping for a stretch of cooler mornings but dry days. Our hay makers are also surely hoping for the rain to subside for a bit- we love the lush pastures, but also need to make sure they can make hay for our cattle!  Some lovely new items this week include kohlrabi, Hakurei turnips, and Nappa cabbage, as well as some gorgeous cauliflower grown by our friends at Row By Row Farm. I can’t help but think about all the amazing pickling opportunities those things offer, but slaw-style salads also come to mind- scroll down to see some suggestions for what to do with this week’s items! As always, thank you all so much for your support and on my end, for the understanding from so many of you as we navigate hiccups here and there.

PICKING UP YOUR SHARE

The site host is Marina Kubicek and she can be contacted at info@foresthillscsa.com

CSA shares are pre-boxed. A volunteer will check your name off of the list, ensuring that you receive your share and any add-on items, fruit and/or eggs. If there are ever any mistakes, this person will make note to share with the farmers, so that can correct any issues the following week.

No returns of egg cartons or fruit containers, please. We cannot reuse these on our farm.
We can accept returns of the folded cardboard boxes that hold the fruit containers. These we are able to reuse!

This Week’s Recipes! Add Kohlrabi to your summer cole slaw! Grated, it adds a sweet yet firm bite and complements almost any other vegetable! Grate some kohlrabi, an apple or pear, some carrots and thinly sliced onion with a dash of celery salt, mustard seeds, salt and pepper! You can add a creamy dressing, or a dash of lemon and olive oil to complement the natural liquid the veggies will produce!
Have you ever tried pickled turnips? You may never eat them any other way!  Slice your Hakureis into coins and pack into a jar, add some garlic scapes, too!

Add a brine of 1:1:1/4 water:apple cider vinegar:sweetner (I love maple syrup or honey, but plain sugar is also lovely!).
