It’s the busiest month on the farm, so my apologies for not sending out regular updates from the fields. Farmer Matt and the crew have been working double-time to keep up with the usual harvesting and maintenance of crops as well as irrigating the whole farm to keep everything alive. All of Suffolk County is experiencing a serious drought and without constant irrigation, our crops would shrivel up and die in this heat.
August is also when we start a new round of planting and transplanting of fall crops for the coming months, including carrots, beets, turnips and fall greens. Our crops are looking especially healthy and robust this year, and we’re pretty sure that the sap testing and amendment applications have a lot to do with it. I’ve mentioned in some of our Instagram & Facebook posts that we’ve starting a new initiative on the farm this year that is allowing us to get an inside look at what’s going on inside our plants. It’s called sap testing and we’re one of the few farms in the world doing it. It’s an innovative technique that requires a lot of extra time and effort, but the results are certainly paying off.
